PRESIDENT HERBERT HOOVER - CIVIL APPOINTMENT SIGNED 06/05/1929 CO-SIGNED BY: WILLIAM D. MITCHELL - DOCUMENT 31991

HERBERT HOOVER and WILLIAM D. MITCHELL
11x17 appointment of a Trustee for the National Training School for Boys, signed by the President and Attorney General
Partly Printed DS:
"Herbert Hoover" as President and "William D. Mitchell" as Attorney General, 1p, 10½x16½. Washington, 1929 June 5. In part: "Know Ye, That, reposing special trust and confidence in the Wisdom, Uprightness, and Learning of Sanford Bates [Director of the Bureau of Prisons], I do appoint him to be a Trustee of the National Training School for Boys; and do authorize and empower him to execute and fulfill the duties of that Office...." Gold Department of Justice seal affixed at lower left. The National Training School for Boys is part of the Bureau of Prisons. Signed just three months after Hoover's inauguration. Less than five months later, on October 29, 1929, the stock market crashed sending the nation into a Great Depression. WILLIAM DE WITT MITCHELL served as Attorney General throughout President Hoover's one term in office (1929-1933). As Attorney General, he was the head of the Justice Department, which includes the Bureau of Prisons, in which Sanford Bates served. Authentically signed Hoover presidential appointments are scarce as he frequently made use of printed signatures. Lightly stained at blank bottom edge. Fine condition.
