HERBERT HOOVER and CHRISTIAN A. HERTER
A card with Hoover's signature as Secretary of Labor, accompanied by a typed transmittal letter signed by his 27-year-old assistant, a future Secretary of State
Comprises: (1) Typed Letter signed: "Christian A. Herter" as Assistant to Mr. Hoover, 1p, 8x10½. Department of Commerce, Office of the Secretary, Washington, 1922 May 11. To Mr. C.B. Whittelsey, Hartford Rubber Works Co., Hartford, Conn. In full: "In compliance with your request of April 28, 1922, Mr. Hoover has asked me to send you the enclosed card which he has autographed." (2) Signature: "Herbert Hoover", 3¾x2 card, inserted in four corner slits at lower blank area of Herter's letter. Paper clip impression on Hoover's autograph touches the "rb" in Herbert. Paper clip impression at upper left corner of letter. Lightly creased throughout. Otherwise, fine condition. CHRISTIAN A. HERTER (1895-1966) was Herbert Hoover's personal assistant from 1921-1924, later serving in the Massachusetts House of Representatives (1931-1943), as a U.S. congressman (1943-1953), and as the governor of Massachusetts from 1953-1957. Herter was also Eisenhower's Secretary of State from 1959-1961. Moreover, he served Presidents Kennedy and Johnson as an international trade negotiator. Two items.
