PRESIDENT HERBERT HOOVER - SIGNATURE(S) - DOCUMENT 293717

HERBERT HOOVER
The 31st U.S. President signs a card from his Alma Mater, Stanford University.
Printed Card signed: "Herbert Hoover", 3½x2 card. Imprinted: "Stanford University, California". Affixed to an 8½x11 page, with a 7¼x7 B/w magazine photograph of Hoover affixed above (3 surfaces). Herbert Clark Hoover (1874-1964) served as the 31st U.S. President from 1929-1933. Blamed by many voters for the Great Depression, he had been defeated in his bid for re-election by Franklin D. Roosevelt. Hoover, a capable administrator, had headed the Food Administration to provide relief to Europe and Russia during and after WWI and served as Secretary of Commerce under Presidents Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge (1921-1928). The second President to attain the age of 90 years (John Adams was the first), Hoover lived a record 31 years after leaving the presidency. During his "retirement", he was appointed to commissions to oversee government agencies by Presidents Harry S Truman (1947) and Dwight D. Eisenhower (1953). He attended Stanford University from 1891-1895 graduating with a degree in geology. At Stanford he met fellow geology student Lou Henry. She attended Stanford from 1894-1898 and received a B.A. degree. Herbert Hoover and Lou Henry were married in 1899. Hoover became a member of Stanford's Board of Trustees and continued his association with Stanford until 1941. Mrs. Hoover designed their home in Palo Alto, California, adjacent to Stanford University. It was here that Hoover awaited the presidential election returns in 1928 when he defeated Alfred E. Smith, and 1932, when he lost to Franklin Delano Roosevelt. After leaving the White House in 1933, the Hoovers moved to Palo Alto while maintaining an apartment in New York City. After his wife's death in 1944, the former President deeded the house to Stanford University and moved to the Towers at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York. From the collection Ralph Errington Ward (1926-2009) a fighter pilot and squadron commander in the China-Burma-India Theater of World War II. Ward became President and CEO of Cheseborough-Ponds, Inc., transforming the cosmetics firm into a major home product conglomerate. Adhesive on verso (affixing card to page). Lightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
