PRESIDENT JAMES A. GARFIELD - MANUSCRIPT LETTER SIGNED 12/07/1875 CO-SIGNED BY: THOMAS J. CASON, JAMES L. EVANS, MORTON C. HUNTER, MILTON S. ROBINSON, MARTIN I. TOWNSEND, EUGENE HALE - HFSID 15460

JAMES A. GARFIELD and OTHERS. Manuscript LS: "J.A. Garfield", "Eugene Hale", "T.J. Cason", "Milton S. Robinson", "Morton C. Hunter", "Martin I. Townsend" and "J.L. Evans", 1p, 7½x9¾. House of Representatives, Washington, D.C. 1875 December 7. To Hon. L.H. Fitzhugh, Door Keeper of the House of Representatives, Washington, D.C. In full: "The undersigned desire to recommend for your consideration the Name of Willie Shoals for an appointment as page of the House. Master Shoals is a bright active boy well qualified for the duties of the positions whose parents reside in this City. We would be gratified if he should be given the place & have no doubt he would give entire satisfaction." JAMES A. GARFIELD (Republican-Ohio) served in the House from 1863-1880, resigning after he was elected President. EUGENE HALE (R-Maine) served in the House (1869-1879) and the U.S. Senate (1881-1911) and was Majority Leader for most of his last decade in the Senate. THOMAS JEFFERSON CASON (R-Indiana) served in the House from 1873-1877. MILTON S. ROBINSON (R-Indiana), JAMES LA FAYETTE EVANS (R-Indiana) and MARTIN I. TOWNSEND (R-N.Y.) served in the House from 1875-1879. MORTON C. HUNTER (R-Indiana) served in the House from 1867-1869 and 1873-1879 and was with General Sherman in his march to the sea. Pages were boys who would carry messages between members of Congress during sessions. They made extra money from autograph collectors who would give them a dollar to fill up their autograph albums with signatures, a common practice in the second half of the 19th century. Today, Congress employs both male and female pages. Vertical folds touch some letters of signatures. Lightly creased and soiled. Overall, fine condition.
