JAMES BUCHANAN
James Buchanan sends an autograph letter as congressman recommending Mr. Joseph Bauman for a vacant post.
Autograph Letter Signed: "James Buchanan" as Congressman, 1p, 7¾x9¾. Washington, 1827 February 24. To Secretary of War James Barbour. In part: "I have been requested to place the name of Mr. Joseph Bauman before you as an applicant for the now vacant post of Barrack Master at Carlisle. He resides in that place & is I believe a respectable man. I presume he will soon send you his recommendation...." Integral leaf addressed by Buchanan: "The Hon: James Barbour/Secretary of War". JAMES BARBOUR was Adams' Secretary of War from 1825-1828. BUCHANAN represented Pennsylvania in the House of Representatives (1821-1831) and the U.S. Senate (1834-1845). Folds, vertical fold touches "e" in James. Slightly nicked, worn edges of letter. Slight separations at blank horizontal folds at margins. Slightly creased, shaded at edges. Address leaf is stained and shaded at mid panel. Torn edge from opening at wax seal, remnant on panel. Pencil notes, unknown hand. Worn edges with tape remnant.
