PRESIDENT JAMES BUCHANAN - MANUSCRIPT LETTER SIGNED 08/06/1846 - DOCUMENT 27657

 
JAMES BUCHANAN. Manuscript LS: "James Buchanan" as Polk's Secretary of State, 1p, 6¾x11¼. Department of State, Washington, 1846 August 6. To "E. Porter Esqre, Consul of the UStates, Frontera de Tabasco". In full: "Your dispatches from No 15 to 21, inclusive, with the Returns & Statements of Fees enclosed in Nos 17 & 19, to the 31st of December 1845 & 30th June 1846 have been received. Your official Bond was received on the 6th of March last from Messrs Howland & Aspinwall of New York, approved and sent to the Treasury Department to be placed on file. Your draft for $18.18¾, being amount of A/c enclosed in No 18 for postages on letters & public documents, was paid on the 25th of March last." Fontera is a coastal port in the Mexican province of Tabasco on the Bay of Campeche on the Gulf of Mexico. The Mexican War had begun on May 13, 1846, three months before this letter was written. Established in 1826, Howland & Aspinwall was a New York merchant firm that specialized in trade with the Caribbean but also traded with Europe and the Far East. Slightly soiled. Rust paper clip stain at upper left blank edge, another touches 1 line of text. Overall, fine condition.
