Appointment of Second Lieutenant of Volunteers during the War of 1812.
Partly Printed DS: "James Madison" as President and "W. Eustis" as Secretary of War, 1p, 14x9¾. Washington, 1812 November 20. In part: "Know Ye, That reposing special trust and confidence in the patriotism, valor, fidelity and abilities of Alexander Erskins I have appointed him second Lieutenant of Volunteers in the service of the United States, conformably to the provisions of the acts of Congress of the sixth of February and sixth of July, one thousand eight hundred and twelve. He is therefore carefully and diligently to discharge the duty of second Lieutenant of Volunteers...." On June 18, 1812, the United States, under the leadership of President MADISON, had declared war against England. WILLIAM EUSTIS had been appointed Secretary of War on March 7, 1809 and served until December 31, 1812. This appointment was signed during the War of 1812, just six weeks before Eustis left office. Fine signatures. Creased at left as a result of the 2¼-inch seal affixed with red wax at lower left. Folds, 1 vertical fold just touches the "o" in Madison. Irregular lower edge. Slightly nicked at left and upper edge. Overall, fine condition.
