PRESIDENT WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON - AUTOGRAPH CHECK SIGNED 02/09/1811 - HFSID 4865

AS GOVERNOR OF INDIANA TERRITORY, HARRISON WRITES HIS OWN SALARY CHECK ON HIS 38TH BIRTHDAY

WILLIAM H. HARRISON
.
Autograph Check signed: "Willm Henry Harrison", 7½x3½. Vincennes, 1811 February 9. The future General in the War of 1812 and ninth U.S. President writes, in full: "To the Cashier of the Bank of Pencylvania (sic). Sir. On the 30th of June next (1811) or as soon after as you may receive my Salary as the Governor of the Indiana for the quarter ending on that day please to pay to Messrs Jones & Dubois or their order one hundred & twenty Dollars & charge the same without further advice to Sir your Huml Servt". Endorsed: "Jones & Dubois" and "Neill & Hurley" on verso. At the time of this check, Harrison was territorial Governor of Indiana and Superintendent of Indian Affairs from 1800-1813, by appointments of Presidents Adams, Jefferson and Madison. As Governor, he opened a huge new area for settlement, obtaining approximately three million acres from the Delaware, Miami, Potawatomi and Eel Indians in return for annuities ranging from $200 to $500 to each tribe. Nine months after he wrote this check, Harrison received his nickname. At dawn, on November 7, 1811, at Tippecanoe Creek, Harrison's army of 800 men was surprised by Indians under the command of the Prophet, brother of Tecumseh. Sixty-one Americans were killed and 127 were wounded, but they managed to drive off the Indians and went on to destroy the deserted Prophet's Town nearby. Harrison was both praised and condemned for his performance, but the battle was used to his political advantage in 1840 with the victorious slogan of "Tippecanoe and Tyler, too". Lightly soiled, creased with folds. Vertical fold touches the "e" in Henry. Irregular lower edge. Mounting remnants on verso (no show though).
