PRESIDENT YASSER ARAFAT (PALESTINIAN NATIONAL AUTHORITY) - PHOTOGRAPH SIGNED - DOCUMENT 271343

YASSER ARAFAT
1994 Nobel Peace Prize winner Arafat is shown in military uniform in this 7x5 photograph.
Photograph signed: "Y. Arafat" in English. Color, 7x5 overall, image 6x4¾ (one surface). Yasser Arafat (1929-2004), who fought to secure a homeland for the Palestinian people, won the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize (with Israeli Prime Minister Rabin and Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres) "for his efforts to create peace in the Middle East". The Oslo accords that the three had signed were seen at the time as a breakthrough toward an independent Palestinian state and a permanent peace with Israel, although many Israelis considered Arafat to be a terrorist and roadblock to peace and Arafat would not live to see a separate Palestinian state. Arafat, who is pictured here in his trademark checkered kaffiyeh, had first been elected to head the Palestine Liberation Organization in 1969, and in 1974 Arab leaders recognized the group as "the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people". In 2000, at a summit at Camp David, Arafat turned down a U.S. backed proposal to settle the continuing conflict with Israel, and Arafat was confined by Israel to his West Bank compound in Ramallah in December 2001. Arafat died in Paris, where he had sought medical treatment for an unspecified illness, at the age of 75. Slightly creased at lower corners. Otherwise, fine condition.
