PRIME MINISTER DAVID BEN-GURION (ISRAEL) - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 04/06/1966 - HFSID 78909

DAVID BEN-GURION
He signs a rare handwritten letter in English (1966). Interesting content!
Rare ALS: "D. Ben-Gurion" in English, 1 page, 4½x8½. Sdeh Boker (Israel), 1966 April 6. To Justin G. Turner. In full: "On the whole I am in entire agreement with my letter of August 22, 1937. I did not agree with some of his policies, but I am convinced he was one of the greates (sic) Jews of his generation. Respectfully yours". Turner's address penned by Ben-Gurion at the bottom: "2389 Westwood Boulevard, Los Angeles 64, California". Israel became independent on May 14, 1948. On that day, David Ben-Gurion (1886-1973) became the Chairman of the Provisional State Council, a post he held until May 17th, when Chaim Weizmann became Head of the Council and Ben-Gurion became Prime Minister. Ben-Gurion was Israeli Prime Minister from May 17, 1948 to December 7, 1953 and from November 2, 1955 to June 21, 1963. "Time" magazine called him "part Washington, part Moses...the architect of a new nation". Lincoln scholar Justin G. Turner received the L.H.D. (Doctor of Human Letters) degree in 1960 and the Eternal Light Award in 1966 from California's University of Judaism. While this letter does not identify the Jewish leader about whom Turner had queried Ben-Gurion, it may have been Ze'ev Jabotinsky (1880-1940), leader of the British army's Jewish Legion during World War I and a founder of the Irgun armed resistance movement. Jabotinsky split with Ben-Gurion in 1937 over the British Peel Commission's recommendation to partition Palestine into Jewish and Arab sections. Jabotinsky favored unified state with Arab and Jewish power sharing. In 1956 Ben-Gurion as Prime Minister refused a request from the American B'nai Brith that Jabotinsky be re-interred in Israel, stating, "Israel does not need dead Jews, but living Jews." This policy was reversed in 1964, after Ben-Gurion left office. Jabotinsky and his wife are now buried in Mount Herzl Cemetery, Jerusalem. Minor nick, paperclip impression and ink stamped number in upper left corner. Otherwise, fine condition. Letters of Ben-Gurion in English are rare and desirable.
