PRIME MINISTER DAVID BEN-GURION (ISRAEL) - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 07/11/1955 - HFSID 87225

DAVID BEN-GURION
Signed, typed letter in Hebrew to Levi Eshkol, praising him for bringing fresh water to the Negev, predicting that "sons and daughters will make the Negev bloom."
TLS: "D. Ben-Gurion" in Hebrew as Israeli Defense Minister, 1 page, 5¾x7¾. Hakiryah, 5715 Tamuz 21/1955 July 11. To Levi Eshkol, Finance Minister. In full: "Peace be with you. My hearty blessings for the completion of the works - the flowing of the Yarkon water to the Negev. Big news to the settlers of this area and to all of us, in an arid desert where the soil is salty, and what is worst - the water there is even saltier - we shall see with our eyes blooming fields, and sweet water penetrating the soil. I have no doubt, that without the power of your belief, your boundless devotion and qualifications, this important project would not have formed skin and bones. Yet the task has not been completed and I am hopeful that sons and daughters will make the Negev bloom." LEVI ESHKOL (1895-1969) developed Israel's water supply system, step by step, starting with a regional water supply project carrying water mainly in the west-to-east direction, then combine the regional project into a multi-regional system by conveyors north-to-south (Yarkon-Negev projects). He was the driving force behind the idea of diverting the springs of the Yarkon River to the Negev, using 66-inch to 70-inch concrete pipes, as far south as the southern Negev. This project had begun just a month before Ben-Gurion's letter. BEN-GURION was Israel's first Prime Minister from 1948-1953, returning to his post on November 2, 1955 (four months after writing this letter), serving again until 1963. Eshkol succeeded him, serving as Prime Minister from 1963 until his death.
