PRIME MINISTER DAVID BEN-GURION (ISRAEL) - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 08/12/1956 - HFSID 77457

DAVID BEN-GURION
Writing to a neighbor in his kibbutz during the Suez crisis, the Prime Minister admits that he is "deeply worried," but promises "the heroes of Israel will not disappoint."
TLS: "D. Ben-Gurion" as Israeli Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, 1 page, 6¼x7¾. Jerusalem, 1956 August 12. To Yehoshua Cohen, a neighbor in Ben-Gurion's kibbutz, Sdeh Boker. In Hebrew, fully translated. In full: "I have received your letter and I have read your words of confidence and trust in our people and in our Government. I cannot hide from you that in these very days I am deeply worried. I am aware of the deep strength within our people but I also cannot be unaware of the weak points. I am sure that nobody will ask me at this time to reveal what are the steps we are taking in our defense. Our generation has been imbued with the difficult and large task of creating a State and defending her and I believe that the heroes of Israel will not disappoint." Three weeks earlier, on July 26, 1956, Egypt had proclaimed the nationalization of the Suez Canal Company (previously controlled by Great Britain and France) and placed it in the hands of an Egyptian operating authority. On September 3, 1956, at a meeting with the Chief of Staff, Prime Minister Ben-Gurion stated that the relevant articles of the General Armistice Agreement were "in suspension" owing to Egypt's noncompliance with the 1951 Security Council resolution about interference of shipping passing through the Suez Canal bound for Israel. On October 29, 1956, Israeli forces invaded Egypt in response to Egypt's actions. On November 5th, Israeli troops occupied the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula. The U.N. ended the fighting by arranging the withdrawal of foreign troops from Egyptian territory. File holes at blank left margin. Light folds, else fine.
