PRIME MINISTER HENRY JOHN TEMPLE (GREAT BRITAIN) - DOCUMENT SIGNED 05/05/1841 - HFSID 23879

PRIME MINISTER HENRY JOHN TEMPLE (GREAT BRITAIN)
As Foreign Minister, he signed this document that is in French, a travel pass for John Heath, Minister to Sweden, and his servant, dated May 5, 1841.
Partly Printed Document signed: "Palmerston" as Foreign Minister, 1 page, 11x18. London, 1841 May 5. Coat of arms of the British monarchy with its motto, "Dieu et Mon Droit", printed at top center. Document numbered 7029. In French. Travel papers for John Heath, England's Minister to the Court in Stockholm (Sweden), and for Thomas Morgan, his domestic. Prime Minister Henry John Temple of Great Britain (1784-1865), popularly known as Lord Palmerston due to his Irish Peerage title as the 3rd Viscount Palmerston, was Britain's Secretary of State for War (1809-1828), Foreign Secretary (1830-1834, 1835-1841, 1846-1851) and Prime Minister (1855-1858, 1859-1865). He held office almost continuously for nearly half a century from 1807 until his death. Because he held an Irish peerage rather than an English one, he was able to sit in the House of Commons. Disliked by Queen Victoria and often abrasive in dealing with foreign governments - he held a lifelong antipathy to the United States - Palmerston was nevertheless effective in promoting British interests. Although he opposed slavery, Palmerston sympathized with the Confederacy on the grounds that a breakup of the United States would benefit Britain. When Palmerston signed this document, Queen Victoria was the British monarch, having ascended the throne in 1837. Palmerston himself was soon to leave office, when the Whig government of Prime Minister Melbourne left office on August 30, 1841. Ink notes (unknown hands) and ornate stamp/seal on verso with show-through at top right margin.  5 horizontal fold creases. Edges creased, chipped at folds and ragged.
