Menachem Begin sends a typed letter of thanks for the message of support.
Typed Letter Signed: "M. Begin" as Prime Minister, 1p, 8½x11. Jerusalem, 1978 April 11. To William Targ, Senior Editor, G.P. Putnam's Sons, New York. In full: "It is with deep feeling that I read your heart-warming message which gave me strength and gratification. I have received, in recent days, very many such messages of solidarity from different parts of the world and I am deeply grateful for the spontaneous moral support they reflect. We shall continue in our effort to achieve genuine security and peace. Again, I thank you for your friendship." Accompanied by original envelope. In 1973, the Likud Party was formed and Menachem Begin (1913-1992) became its leader. When Likud won the elections in 1977, he became Prime Minister. It was during this tenure in 1978, that Begin and Egyptian President Anwar el-Sadat received the Nobel Peace Prize for the peace treaty they would sign the following year at Camp David, after much of the Sinai was returned to Egypt. In June 1981, Begin asked the cabinet to approve the bombing of the Iraqi nuclear reactor at Osirak. On Shavuot, Israeli planes flew below radar detection through Arab airspace and destroyed the facility, which Israel later claimed had been primed for a start up. In 1982, he authorized the Israeli invasion of Lebanon. In failing health and following the death of his wife, Aliza, Begin stepped down in September 1983. Horizontal fold touches signature. Stray ink mark at upper right blank margin. Fine condition. Two items.
