PRIME MINISTER SPENCER PERCEVAL (GREAT BRITAIN) - SIGNATURE(S) CIRCA 1812 CO-SIGNED BY: WILLIAM "2ND EARL OF ST GERMANS" ELIOT, SNOWDON BARNE - HFSID 305579

SPENCER PERCEVAL (GREAT BRITAIN); WILLIAM ELIOT (EART OF ST. GERMANS II), SNOWDON BARNE
Perceval's signature as Prime Minister, the year he became the only British P.M. ever assassinated. He has signed above the signatures of two members of his government, on a document fragment.
Signatures: "SP Perceval", "Wm Eliot", "S. Barne", 3½x1½. Ink note (unknown hand): "Cap:4: to be made out on [?]/ 1872". SPENCER PERCEVAL (1762-1812), A Conservative first elected to Parliament in 1796, rose successively through the offices of Solicitor General, Attorney General, Chancellor of the Exchequer and Leader of the House of Commons to become Britain's Prime Minister (1809-1812). Despite a shaky hold on power, Percival steered the country through several crises: the war with France, the Luddite riots, and the madness of King George III. On May 11, 1812, Percival was shot dead by a disgruntled merchant in the lobby of the House of Commons. He remains the only Prime Minister ever assassinated. WILLIAM ELIOT (1767-1845), the 2nd Earl of St Germans from 1823, was Junior Lord of the Treasury in the Perceval government. Despite his many years as a Tory M. P (1791-1823), Eliot held several foreign diplomatic postings, including the Legations in Berlin and The Hague. SNOWDON BARNE (1756-1825), also a Junior Lord of the Treasury under Perceval, served in Parliament from 1796-1812. He would later serve as Deputy Chairman of the Customs Commission (1812-1823). Toned and lightly creased. Irregularly cut edges. Adhesive at edges. Ink lightly smeared (legible). Otherwise, fine condition.
