WILLIAM E. GLADSTONE. ALS: "W E Gladstone", as British Prime Minister, 1½p (front and verso), 4½x7. Hawarden Castle, Chester, 1881 December 7. To Mrs. Johnson. In full: "Your letter has reached me and I trouble you with a line only to say that it gave me real pleasure to make the offer which I was also glad to learn you had accepted. I close by wishing you every consolation under your great bereavement. I remain my dear madam faithfully yours". Gladstone was British Prime Minister four times: 1868-1874, 1880-1885, 1886 and 1892-1894. Lightly creased. Faint blue stamp marks at upper right of front. Red trim at edges. Slightly soiled.
