President Carter's Secretary of Labor signs an FDC celebrating Labor Day
First Day Cover signed: "Ray Marshall", SIZE? FDC honoring Labor Day, postmarked Camden, New Jersey, September 3, 1956, two 3-cent stamps affixed, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Freddie Ray Marshall (b. 1928), a professor of economics at the University of Texas from 1962, was Secretary of Labor throughout the Carter administration (1977-1981), expanding public service and job training programs. A co-founder of the Economic Policy Institute, he is the author of two books, including Thinking for a Living: Education and the Wealth of Nations (1993). Slightly soiled.
