REAR ADMIRAL DANIEL LAWRENCE BRAINE - TYPED SENTIMENT SIGNED - HFSID 262868

DANIEL L. BRAINE
Typed Sentiment signed as Commandant of the US Navy Yard, on a page also containing an engraved portrait of him
Typed Sentiment signed: "Very respectfully,/D. L. Braine/Rear Admiral, U.S.N./Commandant Navy Yard and Station", 3¾x1½ paper affixed to 9x11½ sheet with 3x4½ engraving affixed above. Daniel Lawrence Braine (1829-1898) was action as a US Navy midshipman during the Mexican War. At the outset of the Civil War, Braine commanded the US gunboat flotilla which attacked the shore batteries at Hampton Roads, Virginia, the first shots exchanged in Virginia during the war. He served in the blockade squadron on the Confederate coast throughout the war. In 1873, Braine, commanding the USS Juniata, took part in the rescue of survivors from the ill-fated Polaris polar expedition. In 1889 Braine, now a Rear Admiral, took command of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, a post where he had previously served as head of the engineering department. In 1890, Braine made headlines by prohibiting patronage hires by the state Republican organization from missing navy work for election campaigning. Lightly creased and soiled. Left edge ragged from previous binding. Edges toned. Newspaper photo (unrelated) affixed to verso, very light show-through. Otherwise, fine condition.
