Photograph inscribed and signed: "Jeffrey/Best wishes/from Carrier Group 3/R. M. Chanik/RADM USN". Color, 8x10. Vice Admiral Evan M. Chanik graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1973. As a naval aviator, he flew F-14 Tomcats off the USS Enterprise. Following a tour as an instructor at the Naval Fighter Weapons School (Top Gun) he completed western Pacific/Indian Ocean deployments onboard USS Constellation and USS Ranger. He was named the Tailhook Association's "West Coast Fighter Pilot of the Year." Returning to the Naval Fighter Weapons School, attached to Nellis Air Force Base, he flew several kinds of aircraft in support of multi-service operational training. In 1988, he became executive officer of VF84 aboard the carrier Theodore Roosevelt, and as squadron commander, led combat operations during the first Gulf War. He became executive officer of the USS Carl Vinson in November 1993. He commanded the Camden (1995) and Enterprise (1997), leading operations in the Persian Gulf and Adriatic. His first flag assignment was on the Office of Chief of Naval Operation staff as Head, Aviation Plans and Requirements (2000-2002.) In April 2002, he reported to Carrier Group 3 as the USS Carl Vinson Battle Group Commander. He completed a temporary assignment as Deputy Commander, Joint Task Force Southwest Asia, supporting Operations Southern Watch and Enduring Freedom from May-September 2002. On return, he led the Carl Vinson Strike Group on deployment in January 2003 in support of the global war on terrorism. Vice Adm. Chanik returned to the Pentagon in August 2004 where he served as the Director, Programming Division and Director, Force Structure, Resources and Assessment. Rising to the rank of Vice Admiral, amassed more than 4,800 flight hours and 850 carrier arrested landings. His awards include Legions of Merit, Bronze Stars, Meritorious Service Medals, Defense Distinguish Service Medal, Air Medal, Navy Commendation Medals with Combat "V", and various service and campaign awards.
