FRANCIS H. GREGORY. Signature: "New York/Aug 10th 1865/F. H. Gregory/Rear Admiral/U.S.N.", 2¾x2 sheet, affixed to 4x2 card. A merchant seaman impressed by the British, he escaped and was commissioned by President Jefferson as a U.S. naval officer. Living from 1789 to 1866, he served with distinction in three American wars. In the War of 1812, he commanded a gunboat which captured a British ship smuggling slaves to New Orleans and then saw naval action on Lake Ontario. In the 1820s and 1830s, he destroyed several pirate ships, including the infamous brig Panchita. During the Mexican war, he commanded the vessels Raritan and North Carolina while blockading the Mexican coast. He came out of retirement to serve throughout the Civil War, gaining promotion to Rear Admiral while supervising construction of naval vessels in private shipyards. Lightly soiled. Mounting paper remnant on verso shows faintly and extends slightly above top edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
