DEDICATION OF FLOYD BENNETT FIELD IN BROOKLYN, NEW YORK
 
RICHARD E. BYRD and BERNT BALCHEN.
Rare Philatelic Envelope signed:
"R.E. Byrd" and "Bernt Balchen", 6x3½. 5-cent Air Mail stamp affixed, postmarked Brooklyn, N.Y., June 26, 1930. Stamped circular cachet: "Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, Official Dedication by Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd of Floyd Bennett Municipal Airport, Brooklyn, New York City, June 26th 1930". Pictorially stamped on verso: "Byrd Antarctic Expedition/Welcome to America". Addressed (unknown hand) to Miss Florence Lampert in Philadelphia. RICHARD E. BYRD and FLOYD BENNETT flew over the North Pole and back to Kings Bay, Spitzbergen (1926). Each was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for the achievement. Bennett died in 1928 at the age of 38. Byrd established the "Little America" Antarctica base and flew over the South Pole in 1929 with BERNT BALCHEN, his chief pilot. Byrd and Balchen are enshrined in the National Aviation Hall of Fame in Dayton, Ohio. Light paper clip stain at upper left margin. Lightly soiled. Overall, fine condition.
