ROBLEY D. EVANS
A signed, handwritten letter thanking an associate for forwarding a copy of his journal. Written the year of his promotion to Rear Admiral
Autograph letter signed: "R.D. Evans/Rear Adm'l U.S.N", 1p, 5x8. Washington, D.C., 1901 August 10. On letterhead of the "Navy Department/Board of Inspection and Survey" to "Editor/Brookley Eagle." Begins: "Dear Sir". In full: "I beg you to accept my thanks for your courtesy in forwarding me a marked copy of your valuable journal. Yours very truly." Signed the year Evans was promoted to Rear Admiral. Rear Admiral Robley D. Evans (1846-1912) commanded the Asiatic Fleet in 1902-1904 and, beginning in March 1905, the Atlantic Fleet. In late 1907 and early 1908, he led a large force of battleships around South America to California on the first leg of the Great White Fleet's historic cruise around the World, but ill health forced him to relinquish his post in May 1908. Lightly creased with fold, not at signature. Lightly toned, esp. heavy on squared regions and on left margin. Corners lightly worn and creased. Slight surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
