B/w, 8x10. Roy Stanley Benson (1906-1995) was executive officer of
the submarine USS Nautilus, which received a Presidential Unit
Citation for its part in the Battle of Midway (June 1942). He earned
the Navy Cross, one of his many medals, and shared another Presidential Unit
Citation as skipper of the submarine Trigger. In 1944 and 1945, he led a
lethally successful submarine wolf pack operating in Japanese home waters.
Alternating between line commands (including a cruiser squadron) and Washington
staff duties during the 1950s, he took command of all subs in the US Pacific
Fleet in 1960. From 1967 until his 1969 retirement, he was Commandant of the
First Naval District, headquartered in Boston. Corners and edges creased.
