RENE MAGRITTE - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 12/07/1962 - DOCUMENT 269093

"THE HERO OF HISTORY RENOUNCES VOLUNTARILY TO THE COMFORT OF THE ALLEGIANCE TO THE NAME OF ONE IDEA"

RENÉ MAGRITTE.
ALS: "RM" in French, 2p, 5¼x8½ (front and verso). Brussels, 1962 December 7. Roughly translated in part: "I have given up my trip to Milan and I have thus received your letter at Brussels. The text of "Marginales" is unknown to me. It seems to me to mean that what is not indifferent can sometimes be considered by the human species which does not only consider the customs which is absolutely indifferent. The 'consequences' are perhaps null. I believe in spite of the general belief of a possible 'progress'...The hero of history renounces voluntarily to the comfort...of the allegiance to the name of one idea...but seems to me to illustrate a sad confusion: the hero is not aware of opposition to the army and that which it implies...." René Magritte (1898-1967) was an important Belgian surrealist painter who placed familiar objects in very unusual settings, prodding the viewer to look for new, symbolic meanings. His works have influenced film makers and musicians, as well as graphic artists, and have frequently been borrowed and parodied. Magritte greatly influenced pop art, although he criticized that genre for genre for representing the world "as it is." In 1962, the year of this letter, Magritte created ten paintings, including his version of the Mona Lisa. Magritte's Surrealist works were characterized by spatial manipulation, metamorphic themes and use of iconographic images, such as men in bowler hats, birds, lions, horsemen and leaves. Magritte died five years after penning this letter, leaving a legacy of some 1,300 paintings. "Marginales" is a collection of international literature. Light show through of writing. Fine condition.
