This page is signed by the British politician and leader of colonial India at the close of the 18th Century
Signature: “Wellesley” in black ink on this 14¼x9½ large sheet of paper. Includes newspaper biographies affixed to the same large sheet, as well as an engraving of the politician with a printed signature. Image 3½x4½. Richard “1st Marquis Wellesley” Wellesley (1760-1853), served as Governor-General of India from 1797-1805.  Wellesley's objective was to expand British rule in India in the wake of the British Empire's embarrassing defeat in the American Revolutionary War, so he concluded alliances with weak native rulers and attacked and defeated the Tipu Sultan of Mysore, annexing lands on both the east and west coasts. Wellesley also conquered the Carnatic on the east coast, large areas around Bombay on the west coast, and attacked the Mahrattas in the second Mahratta War (1803-1805). Uneven edges. Notes in unknown hand. Unknown signers merit further research. Otherwise, fine condition.
