As Secretary of the Interior, he writes to gold miner millionaire Thomas F. Walsh
Typed Letter signed: "R. A. Ballinger" as Secretary of the Interior, 1 page, 5½x9. Seattle, Washington, 1909 July 20. On official letterhead to Thomas F. Walsh, Littleton, Colorado. In full: "I very much regret that I will not be able to visit the Trans-Mississippi Commercial Congress at Denver, August 16-21. Thanking Mrs. Walsh and you for the courtesy of your invitation, I remain, Sincerely yours". Richard Achilles Ballinger (1858-1922) was Mayor of Seattle (1904-1906) and Secretary of the Interior under President Taft (1909-1911). His tendency to favor business interests over environmental ones was a factor in the rift between Taft and former President Teddy Roosevelt which split the Republican Party in 1912. Thomas F. Walsh (1850-1910), an Irish-born miner, struck it rich by discovering the Camp Bird Gold Mine in Colorado (1896). He was President McKinley's commissioner to the Paris exposition of 1899. Multiple mailing folds. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
