ROBERT BADEN-POWELL - SIGNATURE(S) 1900 - HFSID 74914

ROBERT BADEN-POWELL
The famous Lieutenant General who is credited as the founder of the Boy Scouts Association signs this 7x5¼ card, in black ink
Signature: "[Illegible]/Robert Baden Powell", 1 page, 7x5¼. Headed in another hand: "Africa General Service/1900" with 1¼x½-inch African General Service ribbon affixed to page. Second Lieutenant Robert BADEN-POWELL (1857-1941) was detached for scouting service in Africa, in the Ashanti (1895) and Matabele (1896) campaigns. In 1897, he transferred to the 5th Dragoon Guards which he commanded. While he was on leave in England in 1899 he was appointed to raise a force of mounted rifles to be based in Mafeking with the secret aim of making raids on the Boers in Transvaal. Mafeking was beseiged by a superior force of Boers on October 12, 1899, which lasted for 217 days until May 17, 1900. The relief of Mafeking was celebrated throughout the Empire as it was the first victory the British had achieved in the Boer War. In 1908, Baden-Powell founded the Boy Scouts and published Scouting for Boys, based on his army manual Aids to Scouting (1899). Irregular left and lower edges. Sporadically shaded. Lightly rippled. Pencil note (unknown hand) at upper right.
