The United States Congressman signed this card in black felt tip pen
Signature: “Bob Eckhardt” in black felt tip pen on a 3½x2 card. Robert C. Eckhardt (1913-2001) was a Congressman who represented Texas' 8th district from 1967-1981. A life-long Democrat, Eckhardt was one of the more eccentric politicians to walk the halls of the Capitol building. Known for his Panama hat, off-the-cuff remarks, and constant cartoon-drawing habit, Eckhardt was always good for some fun. Legislation that he supported includes the Texas Open Beaches Act (1959), which prevented the drilling and closing of beaches along the Texas shore, leaving them open for public use. He helped publish the Democrat-leaning Texas Observer and drew dozens of cartoons for the publication over decades. Before Eckhardt was elected, he served in the United States Army from 1942-1944 and earned a law degree in 1939. Writing in unknown hand on verso. Toned around edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
