ROBERT (EARL OF LYTTON I) BULWER-LYTTON - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 07/18/1874 - DOCUMENT 73048

ROBERT BULWER-LYTTON, EARL OF LYTTON I
The successful diplomat, who would go on to serve as Viceroy of India, sends this letter regarding the publications of his playwright father
Autograph Letter Signed: "Lytton" in black ink. 3p integral leaf, 4½x7 folded. Written on personal letterhead while titled the Baron Lytton, black-bordered mourning paper. Knebworth, Hertford, England. July 18, 1874. In full: "Dear Sir Frederick, To the best of my belief the rhymed comedy of "Walpole or Every Man has his Price" was published in 1869. That is the date on the title page of my copy of the play published by Blackwood, who was its first, & I believe only publisher. I am writing to Blackwood today and will refer the question to him. The Play of "Not so bad as we seem" which depicts the same period (about 1716) and contains allusions to Sir Robert Walpole, was I think published in 1852 the year when it was first acted. The notion of dramatizing the character of Walpole had I know been long in my fathers' mind even before then. Lord Oxford has promised to send me the correspondence between my father & himself on this subject, but I have not yet received it. Yours, Dear Sir Frederick, very respectfully". Robert Bulwer-Lytton (1831-1891), 1st Earl Lytton, was a British statesman and poet best known for his tenure as Viceroy of India between 1876-1880, which included events such as the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-1880) and the Great Famine of 1876-1878. His son Victor Bulwer-Lytton followed him to India as the Governor of Bengal and for a time, acting Viceroy of India. He furthermore was an accomplished writer and published many poems under the name of Owen Meredith; a few of his popular verses included "Lucile" (1860), "The Wanderer" (1859), "Fables in Song" (1874), and "Glenaveril" (1885). Normal mailing folds. Slightly worn and soiled. Ink stains throughout. Corners rounded. Light surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
