3x5 card signed by Curl in blue ink
Signature: "Robert Curl" in blue ink. 5x2¾. Curl, born in Alice, Texas in 1933, is an American chemist who shared the 1996 Nobel Prize for Chemistry with Richard E. Smalley and Sir Harold W. Kroto. The three men earned their Nobel for discovering the first fullerenes, which are hollow tubes or spheres of pure carbon. This form of carbon is named after R. Buckminster Fuller because one spherical fullerene (also known as a buckyball) has its atoms arranged on the same structural principles as a geodesic dome, which was developed by Fuller. Curl, Smalley and Kroto discovered buckyballs; Iijima Sumio of Japan discovered tube-shaped fullerenes, known as nanotubes, in 1991. Lightly toned and creased, otherwise in fine condition.
