ROBERTA BONDAR
Color photograph of Roberta Bondar, the first Canadian woman in space, in a Canadian Astronaut Program jumpsuit. Signed with her "Best wishes"
Inscribed photograph signed "Maxie/Best wishes/Roberta Bondar". Color, 8x10 overall, 6x7¾ image, one surface, printed on cardstock. Canadian neurologist Bondar, born in 1945, was the first Canadian woman in space. She was one of the first six people to be chosen when the National Research Council of Canada created its own astronaut training program in 1983 and was Payload Specialist for the first International Microgravity Laboratory Mission (ILM-1) on board Space Shuttle mission STS-42 (Jan. 22 to Jan. 30, 1990). Bondar retired from the astronaut program on her return and spent over a decade heading a space medicine research team to study the links between astronauts recovering from the effects of microgravity on their bodies and neurological diseases. Lightly toned, otherwise in fine condition.

Born: December 4, 1945 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada

Roberta Bondar is Canada's first female astronaut and the first neurologist in space. Following more than a decade as NASA's head of space medicine, Bondar became a consultant and speaker in the business, scientific, and medical communities.
 
Bondar has received many honours including the Order of Canada, the Order of Ontario, the NASA Space Medal, over 22 honorary degrees and induction into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame.
