Autograph Letter on a postcard, identifying his early publications, signed and dated by him in 1945
Autograph Letter Signed: "Roy Chapman Andrews", 5½x3¼ New York, N.Y., 1945 February 26. To "Dear Mr. Roberts", in full: "My first published book was 'Whale Hunting with Gun & Camera' D. Appleton & Co. 1917. I think there were 2,000 copies in the first edition. The 'Cal. Gray Whale' was a scientific manuscript - 1,000 copies - paper bound". Addressed in his hand to Lester Roberts, San Francisco. Roy Chapman Andrews (1884-1960), long associated with the American Museum of Natural History in New York, made his initial discoveries at sea, studying marine mammals as noted in this ALS. His major discoveries, however, were made in China and Mongolia in the 1920s, when his expedition discovered fossils of many previously unknown dinosaur species, including Protoceratops, Oviraptor, and the now famous Velociraptor. In 1923 it discovered the first fossil dinosaur eggs. In 1927 the Boy Scouts of America created the new category of Honorary Scout to award it to Andrews. He was President of the Explorers Club (1931-1934). In all, Andrews wrote 23 books. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
