SAM SHEPPARD, MARILYN REESE SHEPHARD and THOMAS S. REESE. Rare Partly
Printed Check signed: "Thos. S. Reese", endorsed on verso:
"Marilyn Reese Sheppard" and "Sam H. Sheppard", 6¼x2¾.
Cleveland, Ohio, 1946 August 2. Drawn on the Central National Bank of
Cleveland, payable to Marilyn Reese Sheppard for $50. Sam Sheppard and
Marilyn Reese were married in September 1945, 11 months before this check was
written by her father. On the night of July 3, 1954, MARILYN REESE
SHEPPARD (1922-1954) was bludgeoned to death in her bed. On December 21,
1954, her husband, neurosurgeon SAM SHEPPARD (1923-1970), was found
guilty of the crime and sentenced to life in prison. In 1955, Dr. Sheppard's
appeal to the state court of appeals was rejected, and the denial was upheld in
the subsequent appeals, including one to the U.S. Supreme Court. In 1963,
Marilyn's father, THOMAS S. REESE committed suicide. In 1964, with the
help of renowned defense attorney F. Lee Bailey, Sheppard was released and
granted a new trial. On November 16, 1966, Sheppard was found not guilty.
The Sheppard case inspired the popular TV series, The Fugitive,
televised from 1963-1967. THIS IS THE FIRST DOCUMENT WE HAVE EVER SEEN SIGNED
BY BOTH SHEPPARD AND HIS WIFE! All signatures are bold. Cancellation holes
minimally affect both Sheppard signatures. Otherwise, fine condition.
