Signed Autograph Letter (1885) sending a prominent scholar who died later that year "best wishes for this world and the next."
Autograph Letter signed: "S. Austin Allibone", 5½x8 Lenox Library, New York, 1885 January 2. To Townsend Ward, Brooklyn, New York. In full: "Compliments of the season and best wishes for this world and the next for all of you. I enclose a check for $5 subscription for 1885. Faithfully your friend." Samuel Austin Allibone (1816-1889) was a voracious reader and prolific American author. Among his works was a massive 3-volume Critical Dictionary of English Literature and British and American Authors, published between 1854 and 1871. From 1879 to 1888 he was librarian of the Lenox Library in New York City. Allibone also wrote and edited Protestant religious works. Townsend Ward (1817-1885), trained in the law but devoted more to scientific and literary publications, was an active in historical and natural history societies. Was Ward, who died a few months after this letter was written, already ailing? If so, it would not have been unnatural for Allibone, a devoutly religious man, to send him "best wishes for this world and the next." 2 horizontal fold creases. Lightly toned and creased. Bottom corners creased. Otherwise fine condition.
