Rare manuscript military appointment signed by Samuel Dexter as Secretary of War in 1801, appointing a cadet in the Corps of Artillerists and Engineers. A rare signature from a man who held seats in both chambers of Congress and two presidential cabinet positions!
Military appointment signed "Saml. Dexter". 1 page, 7½x9¾, 1 sheet folded, docketed on verso, 2-inch diameter embossed Department of War seal near left edge. War Office, Washington, D. C., March 2, 1801. The document appointed Joseph B. Wilkinson a cadet in the Corps of Artillerists and Engineers. Massachusetts lawyer Dexter (1761-1816) was a member of the state house of representatives in 1788 before being elected U. S. Representative from Massachusetts' 1st District (1793-1795) and U. S. Senator from Massachusetts (1799-1800). He was also Secretary of War (1800-1801) under President John Adams. When Secretary of the Treasury Oliver Wolcott, Jr. resigned in Dec. 31, 1800, Dexter was also appointed interim Secretary of the Treasury (1801) in Wolcott's stead. Dexter also ran an unsuccessful campaign for the governorship of Massachusetts in 1816. Lightly toned, soiled, stained, foxed and creased. Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
