3x2 slip of paper signed by him as a US brevet colonel
Signature: "S. F. Chalfin/Br Col. U.S.A.", 3¼x2 paper. Samuel Fletcher Chalfin (1825-1891) graduated from West Point in 1847 and was immediately sent to Mexico. Later he returned to the Academy as a language instructor. He fought against the Seminole Indians in Florida, and commanded the 5th US Artillery in the early phases of the Civil War. He became Assistant Adjutant General in June 1863. In March 1865, Chalfin was brevetted a colonel, the rank he has added to this signature. After the war he was Provost Martial of Richmond, Virginia, earning praise from residents of that city for his fair administration. He was the father of noted architect Paul Chalfin. Adhesive residue (previous mounting) on verso (shows through). Stains at upper left and upper right corners. Otherwise, fine condition.
