SAUL BELLOW, CZESLAW MILOSZ, IRIS MURDOCH and ISAAC BASHEVIS SINGER
First Day Cover signed by all four, framed with photos of each and two explanatory plaques in the Gallery of History style (33x21)
First Day Cover signed: "Saul Bellow", "Czeslaw Milosz", "Iris Murdoch" and "Isaac Bashevis Singer", 6¼x3½. FDC for the 1970 Christmas stamp, 6-cent stamp affixed, postmarked Washington, D.C., November 5, 1970, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. SAUL BELLOW (1915-2005) received the 1976 Nobel Prize in Literature. Among the writings of the Canadian-born Jewish author are Dangling Man (1944), The Adventures of Augie March (1953) and Humboldt's Gift (1976, Pulitzer Prize). Lithuanian-born Polish poet CZESLAW MILOSZ (1911-2004) won the 1980 Nobel Prize in Literature. His most compelling poems, written as a witness to the Holocaust, were banned in Poland until after he received the Nobel Prize. IRIS MURDOCH (1920-1992), wrote 26 novels and philosophical works. She was married to literary critic, novelist and Oxford professor John Bayley, whose memoirs of their life together and Iris' struggle with Alzheimer's disease, became the basis of the 2001 Academy Award-winning film, Iris. Polish-born ISAAC BASHEVIS SINGER (1904-1991) became a world-renowned Yiddish author whose works include Yentl (1983). Singer received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1978. Fine condition. Framed in Gallery of History style: 33x21½.
