SHERMAN ADAMS. TLS: "Sherman Adams" as Assistant to the President, 1p, 6¼x9¼. Washington, D.C., 1956 April 13. On White House letterhead to Mrs. Olive Harris, Birmingham, Alabama. In full: "The President has asked me to thank you for your friendly letter calling his attention to the accompanying article. He wants you to know that your good wishes mean a great deal to him." Sherman Adams (1899-1986) was a U. S. Representative from New Hampshire (1945-1947), Governor of that state (1949-1953) and Chief of Staff to President Eisenhower (1953-1958). He was forced to resign following disclosure of his acceptance of gifts, including a vicuna coat, from a Boston businessman seeking preferred treatment from federal agencies. Creased at upper blank margin. Fine condition.
