SIMEON B. CHITTENDEN - MANUSCRIPT LETTER SIGNED 05/31/1878 - HFSID 34315

SIMEON B. CHITTENDEN. Manuscript LS: "S.B. Chittenden" as Republican Congressman from the city of Brooklyn, N.Y., 1p, 5¼x8¼. House of Representatives, Washington, D.C., 1878 May 31. The publisher of the Brooklyn daily, the Union, writes to Alex. C. Twining, New Haven. In full: "Yours of May 18th came here in my absence. Since my return two or three days ago, Genl Garfield has sent me your letter to him of same date. There is little prospect I think of any action in your favor at this session. We now seem likely to adjourn in two weeks. I was not able to see Genl Cox to day, but shall probably see him tomorrow, and will confer with him." General Garfield was the future 20th U.S. President; General Cox was Grant's Secretary of the Interior and Major General of Volunteers in the Civil War. Both Garfield and Cox were, at the time, Republican Ohio Congressmen. The second session of the 45th Congress adjourned on June 20, 1878. Fine condition.
