At 90, he writes of sending a case of wine to an old frined
Autograph Letter Signed: "Simon Cameron", 1p, 5x8. Harrisburg (Pa.), 1889 May 7. To Col. William B. Fordney, Lancaster, Pa. In full: "How are you my good old Friend. I am getting old-but am well enough for one of my age-and hope that I may soon have the pleasure of entertaining you at Donegal. I have taken the liberty to send you a case of Wine by Mr. Sloymaker." Silked to attach separated folds. Fine condition. Accompanied by original envelope addressed by Cameron. Lightly soiled and stained. 1x1¼ cut at lower left corner from removal of postage stamp. Cameron (1799-1889), U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania from 1845-1849, 1857-1861 and 1867-1877, was a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination in 1860 won by Lincoln on the third ballot. He was selected by President Lincoln to be his Secretary of War (1861-1862). The 90-year-old Cameron many have felt well when he wrote this letter, but seven weeks later, on June 26, 1889, he died. Two items.
