Pennsylvanian asks Ohioan to speak in his state.
ALS: "Simon Cameron", 1p, 5x8. Harrisburg, 1871 September 17. To Hon. John Sherman, Mansfield, Ohio. In full: "Our people are anxious to hear you before the election, and joining them heartily in this desire, I write to ask you to make one or more speeches in Pennsylvania during our campaign. If you can comply with this request please let me know in advance, so that I can arrange for you at Harrisburg; where I shall be glad to entertain you at my house." CAMERON (1799-1889)was Senator from Pennsylvania (Democrat, 1845-1849; Republican, 1857-1861, 1867-1877) and was Lincoln's Secretary of War (1861-1862). SHERMAN was Republican Senator from Ohio (1861-1877, 1881-1897) and later was Hayes' Secretary of the Treasury (1877-1881) and McKinley's Secretary of State (1897-1898). Light folds, vertical one touches "n" in Simon. Slightly soiled in lower blank margin. Overall, fine condition.
