Prominent Australian aviator signs First Day Cover envelope
First day cover signed: "Norman Brearley" in blue ink. 6½x3¾ envelope, First Day of Issue "Dayton Air Fair" stamp dated July 19, 1980. Australian aviator Norman Brearley (1890-1989) began his career as a mechanic, and after a 5-year apprenticeship he worked his way to the United Kingdom in 1915, where he enlisted in the Royal Flying Corps. Brearley was severely injured while flying in France during World War I, after which he returned to Australia to recover. In 1921, recovered, he founded the West Australian Airways LTD, and was awarded the first every civil pilot's license under the Air Navigation Regulations; furthermore Brearley opened the Perth Flying School at Maylands and eventually merged his airline with Australian National Airways after which he retired from commercial aviation. He served with the Royal Australian Air Force in World War II, and was knighted for his services in 1971. Slightly toned. Corners rounded. Pencil notes on verso in unknown hand. Otherwise, fine condition.
