British General Ralph Abercromby (1734-1801), son of a Scottish landowner, participated in the capture of the fortress of Louisbourg (Canada) from the French during the Seven Years War (1758). Returning to military duty during the Napoleonic Wars, he commanded troops in Flanders (1793-1794) and the Caribbean, leading a failed attempted to capture San Juan, Puerto Rico. In 1801, he led the British amphibious landing against entrenched French forces at Abukir (Abu Qir) Bay, Egypt, winning a decisive victory but being mortally wounded. He is credited with improving discipline in the British army. His wife was made a Baroness after his death. Irregularly trimmed. Horizontal fold touches top of "R" and "A" in signature.
