SIR STANLEY BAKER - CLIPPED SIGNATURE - DOCUMENT 19017

STANLEY BAKER
Signature of the actor who turned down the role of James Bond in Dr. No, affixed to a sheet with a candid photo
Signature: "Stanley Baker", 2¾x1¼ affixed to a 3¼x3½ sheet with a candid photo of him (B/w, 2¼x2¼). Three surfaces. Date written along left edge ("6-28-76") is the date of his death, not the signing date. Welsh actor Sir Stanley Baker (1928-1976) appeared in films from 1949, with some of his best known roles coming late in his career. These included the role of Lt. Chard in Zulu (with a young Michael Caine, 1964) and Joseph Losey's Accident (1967). However, Baker reportedly turned down the starring role in Dr. No, the part which made a star of Sean Connery. Baker, an admirer of the real Lieutenant Chard, acquired Chard's Victoria Cross and Zulu War Medal in 1972. One month before his death, Baker was knighted by his friend Prime Minister Harold, on what became known as the "Lavender List" of very controversial knighthoods bestowed by Wilson as he left office. Signature lightly beaded but legible. Fine condition.
