PRE-REVOLUTIONARY WAR PENNSYLVANIA: SOLOMON BOON
This fascinating document is from the mid-1740s and is the petition
of a farmer to have a public road built from his farm to Bristol, Pennsylvania.
He requested the road so that he wouldn't be "frequently Oblig'd to go miles
about thro' Intricate Paths to his no Small Difficulty" in order to conduct
Manuscript document signed "Solomon Boon". 1 page, 7¾x5¾,
docketed on verso. In full: "To the Honourable Bench of Justices now
holding Court in Newton for the County of Bucks The Petition of Solomon Boon of
the Township of Bristol in the County Afforesaid [sic] Humbly Sheweth
[sic] That where the said Solomon Boon hath for a considerable time
Laboured under very great inconveniences for want of a Publick [sic] Road
from his House to the Borough fo Bristol (being three miles Disstant) [sic]
and is frequently Oblig'd to go miles about thro' Intricate Paths to his no
Small Difficulty which also is stop'd at the discretion of the Owners of the
Land thro' which he is Oblig'd to pass humbly Desireth the Honourable Bench to
take his Case under their consideration and to make such regulations as by them
shall be though most convenient for his beenfit that he may no Longer be kept a
Prisoner on his Plantation for want of a Publick [sic] Road to goon
[sic] his Lawful Business And your Petitioner as in Duty Bound shall ever
[illegible]". There isn't much information on Boon. We do know that
he was of Swedish descent, owned a farm in Bristol, Pennsylvania before 1743 and
had three sons, one of whom was also named Solomon. The older Solomon Boon died
in 1743. This petition is from either 1743 or 1745, when the older or younger
Solomon Boon requested to have a public road built from Bristol to his home - a
petition that was successful. Lightly toned and foxed. Hole in document near
bottom edge, which touches signature. Show-through from docket, random ink
stains and light tears along left and right edges touch manuscript writing but
not signature. Manuscript writing, not signature, is lightly smeared in places,
but is legible. Irregular edges. Folded once vertically and thrice horizontally.
Otherwise in fine condition.
