ARCHBISHOP T.J. TOOLEN. TLS: "+ T.J. Toolen" as Archbishop, Bishop of Mobile-Birmingham, 1p, 8½x11. Mobile, Alabama, 1968 November 22. On letterhead of the "Archbishop's Residence" to Mr. Danny Franklin, Sunnyslope, Arizona. In full: "Thanks a million for your letter of October 25th. Sorry to have kept you waiting so long for an answer. I hope that this letter will fulfill your desire for an autograph. I don't have any pictures around that I could send you, so just accept this note. I am very grateful for your thinking of me and wishing me well. I think that I am the oldest active bishop in the United States at the present time, which proves that the Lord has been very good to me in giving me the best of health. I hope that you are well and I will say a prayer that Almighty God will grant you health and strength. Sincerely in Christ". Toolen was 82 years of age when he signed this letter. Thomas Joseph Toolen (1886-1976), who had been ordained a Priest in 1910, was appointed Bishop of Mobile (Alabama) in 1927. In 1954, he was given the title of Archbishop of Mobile-Birmingham. After retiring in 1969, the year after he signed this letter, Toolen became Titular Archbishop of Glastonia. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Fine condition.
