This 1908 letter, on New York State Executive Chamber stationery, is signed by Governor and future Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Charles Evans Hughes. It's also signed by Chief Justice Warren Burger and all eight members of his 1970-1971 Supreme Court. Documents signed by two chief justices and an entire Supreme Court are extremely rare.
Typed letter signed: "Charles Evans Hughes"  in closing and "Hugo L. Black", "W O Douglas", "Potter Stewart", "Wm J Brennan Jr", "Byron R. White", "J Marshall Harlan", "Warren E. Burger", "Thurgood Marshall" and "Harry A. Blackmun" along right edge in various inks, 1p, 7¾x10½, on New York State Executive Chamber stationery. No place, 1908 March 11. Addressed to Mr. Manning P. Brown, Passaic, N.J. In full: "Dear Sir: In accordance with your request I take pleasure in sending you my autograph./ Very truly yours". This letter is signed by two Chief Justices of the Supreme Court: CHARLES EVANS HUGHES (1930-1941) and WARREN E. BURGER (1969-1986). Evans was Governor of New York from 1907 to 1910, hence the New York Executive Chamber stationery. It's also signed by all eight members of Burger's 1970-1971 court: HUGO L. BLACK, HARRY A. BLACKMUN, WILLIAM J. BRENNAN, WILLIAM O. DOUGLAS, JOHN MARSHALL HARLAN, JR., THURGOOD MARSHALL, POTTER STEWART, and BYRON "WHIZZER" WHITE. Lightly toned and creased. Show-through from adhesive residue on verso (does not touch signature). Otherwise, fine condition.
