THOMAS CORWIN - AUTOGRAPH CHECK SIGNED 02/14/1834 - DOCUMENT 17229

THE FUTURE SECRETARY OF THE TREASURY WRITES A CHECK TO A FELLOW OHIO U.S. CONGRESSMAN

THOMAS CORWIN.
Autograph Check signed: "Tho. Corwin" as U.S. Congressman from Ohio, 7¼x3, affixed to sheet of same size. Washington, D.C., 1834 February 14. In full: "Cashier of the United States bank at Washington, Pay the [portion missing] J M Bell fifty dollars & Charge to me." THOMAS CORWIN (1794-1875) was serving as Whig U.S. Senator from Ohio (1845-1850) when he resigned to enter President Millard Fillmore's Cabinet as Secretary of the Treasury on July 20, 1850. He had previously represented Ohio in the U.S. House of Representatives (1831-1840) and was Governor of Ohio (1840-1842). After Fillmore's term expired in 1853, Corwin returned to Ohio, where he was again elected to the House, this time as a Republican. He served from 1859-1861, when President Lincoln appointed him as U.S. Minister to Mexico (1861-1864). The payee of this check was JAMES MARTIN BELL (1796-1849), who was Corwin's fellow U.S. Representative from Ohio from 1833-1835. Bell had previously served in the Ohio state house of representatives (1826) and was later Mayor of Cambridge, Ohio. Bell's endorsement on verso is covered by mounting sheet (only the "J" is visible). Creased with folds, not at signature. 4 holes at second line touch the "e" of the and remove 1 word. ¼-inch tear at upper margin at the handwritten amount, nicked at lower blank edge. Lightly soiled and stained. Light show through of writing and mounting remnants on verso, which also has pencil notes (unknown hand).
