THOMAS CORWIN - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 03/22/1852 - DOCUMENT 17228

 
THE SECRETARY OF THE TREASURY WRITES A LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION FOR THE NEW DISTRICT ATTORNEY FOR MICHIGAN
 
THOMAS CORWIN. ALS: "Tho Corwin" as Fillmore's Secretary of the Treasury, 1p, 7¾x9¾. Washington City, 1852 March 22. To Honorable H. Hale. Begins: "Dear Sir". In full: "This will introduce you to my friend George C Bater. Mr. B has just [illegible] the office of Dist Atty for Michigan to practice the law before you & the other Tribunals of California. I know Mr B thoroughly He is an honest, honorable man. He will deceive no one. He is a man of fine talents & a throughly educated lawyer. I esteem him so much that I have a [illegible] interest in his welfare & commend him [illegible] to your favorable regards." Handwritten postscript, initialed: "TC". In full: "P.S. I hope your health is fully restored & that you may be happier in your new vocation than I can hope to be in my prison". Thomas Corwin (1794-1875) was serving as Whig U.S. Senator from Ohio (1845-1850) when he resigned to enter President Millard Fillmore's Cabinet as Secretary of the Treasury on July 20, 1850. He had previously represented Ohio in the U.S. House of Representatives (1831-1840) and was Governor of Ohio (1840-1842). After Fillmore's term expired in 1853, Corwin returned to Ohio, where he was again elected to the House, this time as a Republican. He served from 1859-1861, when President Lincoln appointed him as U.S. Minister to Mexico (1861-1864). Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Ink smudged at some words. Ink note (unknown hand) at upper right corner, light pencil note (unknown hand) above initials, pencil erasures at upper margin. Glue stains at blank left edge, which is chipped and torn. Upper left corner, which is folded back on scan, is intact.
