British statesman writes third-person note to a friend in London
Third person autograph note: "To be sent to/ Lady Harriet Haflestern/ Grosvenor Square/ with T.W. Ackland's most affectionate regards" in brown ink. 1 page, 7x4½, affixed to irregularly cut 7x7 piece of paper. Thomas Dyke Acland, 11th Baronet (1809-1898) was a British politician best known for his work in educational reform. Born to the well-known Thomas Dyke Acland, 10th Baronet, Acland joined Parliament as a Tory in 1837 and became a supporter of Sir Robert Peel's famous free trade policies. However, Acland really made educational reform his own and promoted the maintenance and defense of church schools, and later the establishment of Oxford local examinations system. He was also involved in agricultural issues and was a Trustee of the Royal Agricultural Society. Toned. Creased throughout. Dark stains along edges. Adhesive stains throughout. Otherwise, fine condition.
